jazz in the papers part two ...........

apologies can't find the old thread ...

but this review by John Fordham of the Cannonball Adderly Tribute Band prompted some questions

does any one still go to Scotts and how do they afford it?

Do tribute bands need discussing again, Vincent Herring makes the point that this one has an original member playing in Louis Hayes?

Jazz is not in the papers enough .....

That's saved me hunting around for the old thread.

Bobby Wellins on the forthcoming revival of his Culloden Suite by Tommy Smith and the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (with Wellins as soloist): http://www.heraldscotland.com/mobile...ntry-1.1130135

(Apologies for the odd format of the article, but you need to log in to read it on the standard version of the Herald's site.)

Yes but this Tommy Smith promotion has Bobby fronting his own work - fine by me as far as it goes... but what was so wrong with the *original* arrangement (which admittedly I never heard, not even in the 70s revival mentioned in the above) that a brand new one has to be created, using a third party?

Maybe as in the case of Garrick's original "Dusk Fire" setting for the NJO in the 1960s, it has been lost...

Yep, in the pre-concert talk Bobby Wellins said that the reason it was being re-orchestrated was that the original parts had been lost.

A very fine piece, although I marginally preferred the second half, Bobby's "Caledonian Suite", which was inspired by James Barke's series of biographical novels about Robert Burns. All the gigs on the tour are being recorded, so there's the possibility of it coming out on CD at some point. The SNJO's collaboration with Arild Andersen is due out on ECM early next year.

Last night's concert was also filmed for a forthcoming documentary on Bobby Wellins, although it wasn't made clear if this was going to be a TV documentary or a film.

Oh, and the other interesting comment from the pre-gig discussion was Tommy Smith's remark that the German radio jazz orchestra were very well-funded, but were unfortunately very possessive about their arrangements. I think he'd been trying to borrow or hire some charts from the NDR or WDR bands but had had no success.

A couple of other recent interviews from the (Glasgow) Herald:

              Joe Harriot's biographer, Alan Robertson

Saxophonist Tia Fuller. And, if like me, you hadn't heard of her, here she is:

Pheeeeeuw!!! If there's still guys around claiming women can't do jazz, they should be tied to a chair with a gun pointed at them, and made to watch that clip.

She's playing London (Bull's Head) today (19th) and (Pizza Express) tomorrow, and then the Dundee Jazz Festival on Tuesday 22nd. If you're anywhere near any of the gigs it should be well worth going. The Dundee festival band says that she's appearing with an all female band, so presumably it's the lot in the video, who all sound like absolutely top-notch players.

Great stuff, Calum. JF has a uniquely engaging way of presenting jazz on paper, and imo comes across well on the wireless, if anybody's listening at R3 HQ?

Last time I went to Ronnie Scotts I ended up sitting behind a pillar and didn't see a thing. What a rip off !!!!

606 Club down in Chelsea is much better.
