...speaking of quintets what do you make of these guys?

Fantastic. Nothing can better it imv except JT always just pips Beck or anyone else for that matter in any KW band. Stan's still playing great of course, but we seldom see Oxo over here these days; and sadly Gordon Beck is no more. I wonder who the bass player was there, Neils-Orsted? - and when this was - don't recognise him tbh.

Here's a clip featuring my latest hero. Word of warning, this features a lot of bad language and sexual content but it is extremely funny: Curious to see "jazz singer " Norah Jones pop up in this feel too.

The first of last night's double gig at The Amersham was the project of another comparative newcomer to the scene, courtesy the Loop Collective, Dan Nicholls. He's to have his CD's debut early in June at The Vortex, of which we were given a two-man preview last night, consisting of himself on laptop and keyboard and Dan Smith, drums and sampler. Some top musicians lending their hand; I think he knows where he's going:

The genial Arthur Lea's trio was on second. Unfortunately I can't find any youtube, here he is at the joanna:

arthurlea.co.ukArthur Lea is professional musician based in London. He performs and records around the UK and internationally, in a variety of settings and g...

There was a 30-minute sampler of the trio on sale for a fiver - I bought that too. £20 and a bit more for a round of drinks - not bad for a night out in rainy New Cross!

Thanks for that Beck/Wheeler quintet clip. I thought Oxley had given up playing tonal music, nice to see him in such a setting.

There are a couple of other clips from the same gig, which say it was recorded in Taunton (!) in 1991. (

My guess is the bassist is Alec Dankworth

                        Calum

Still trying to unscramble my head from your last posting. This is a nice contrast from Mr Shorter and one of my favourites amongst his many compositions. Shame that the Abersold book doesn't cover his recent work and just the more celebrated stuff from the 60's:-
