I sometimes felt Mr Joseph was a tad cosy with his guests, I have to say...

On the subject of Julian Joseph, (well, why not? It's the sorta balmy day when some people don't mind if you go off-topic), I wonder how many here contributing to the bored were there at the 1991 Outside-In Festival in Crawley to experience Julian's quartet with Peter King guesting? 4 tunes of that occasion - Julian on acoustic piano; Jean Toussaint, tenor sax; Alec Dankworth, bass; and Mark Mondesir, drums - were subsequently broadcast on one of R3's then-current jazz programmes, and taped by me. Returning home by train one night, I happened to be listening to that cassette on my Walkman, and an attractive young woman sitting opposite interrupted to remark that I was obviously enjoying whatever i was listening to; and could I let her hear what it was?! I gladly obliged - well, who wouldn't: it was such good jazz? - and quickly observed the energising effect the music was having on her. Quite some time later she handed back the phones and commented, "Amazing!". She then asked, "What kind of music is that? And where does one get to hear it?"

                    Some things never change...
