BARNEY WILEN - Jazz Library upcoming...

"The French saxophonist Barney Wilen is best known for his 1950s recordings with Miles Davis, on the score for Louis Malle's film "Lift to the Scaffold". But his work is much wider than this. After growing up in America, he fitted naturally into groups led by the drummer Roy Haynes, Art Blakey and Kenny Clarke. But he was also a towering figure in his own country's music, pioneering both jazz rock and world music influences on jazz. Tom Perchard joins Alyn Shipton to explore the high points in Wilen's recorded repertoire."

BIG admirer of Barney. Some great music in the 50s, NOT so struck on Le rock era, but again some great stuff on his return to straight(er) playing. AND he's a comic book hero!

So Euro(pean) Jazz!... next Bobby Jasper? Rene Thomas? Le Bluesnik hot seven?

    BN.

GREAT PROGRAMME (AGAIN) - AND I DO appreciate the need to present an overview of a career, a result of which includes some duff/dire stuff (of its awful '68ish time) - Hey those animal noises and the Balti to go!

But all in the RICH mix of Le Barney. I'd add the great "French Movie" album with Mal Waldron's trio (includes revisits to "Scaffold"), and the New York Ballads album.

TOTALLY disagree that Barney didn't seem to "push" himself - EH? that GORGEOUS version of Porgy should be evidence of the commitment, talent and intelligence. Give me a French beer and a garlic roll NOW! Hold the Sartre.

        BN.

BTW THere is a live (good bootleg) CD of Barney with Miles in Amsterdam in '57 available ...Tres bon bon! HE plays a treat ("Hey man. why do you have to play all those bad notes?!)

"AMSTERDAM CONCERT" is a rare live Miles Davis recording from 1957.

One of the least known Miles Davis recordings around, this album contains the complete Amsterdam concert recorded on December 8, 1957 with the talented tenor saxophonist Barney Wilen and the Rene Urtreger Quartet. This recording has remained virtually unavailable on any format for decades, Lonehill Jazz is proud to put this hidden gem back into circulation. 20-bit remastered.

A lost Miles Davis concert -- recorded in 1957, with many of the same players he used for his classic soundtrack to the French film Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud! The group's a quintet with French players Barney Wilen on tenor, Rene Utreger on piano, and Pierre Michelot on bass -- grooving with help from Kenny Clarke on drums -- and tracks are longish and include many late 50s jazz standards -- like "Bag's Groove", "Four", "Walkin", "Round Midnight", and "Lady Bird". Barney Wilen's young tone is razor sharp at this point -- and makes for a great counterpoint to the sweeter horn of Miles, coming together with the same magic they shared in their wonderful soundtrack work together. ”

          tracklist
          1. Woody 'N' You
          2. Bag's Groove
          3. What's New
          4. But Not For Me
          5. A Night in Tunisia
          6. Four
          7. Walkin'
          8. Well You Needn't
          9. Round About Midnight
          10. Lady Bird

                  Absolutely. :(

Not got round to hearing this on Listen Again yet. Which is one of my gripes: it just isn't the same, using the computer to access radio.

Finally Listened Again. Great programme. Can't say I'll be rushing out to buy all those sides (certainly not at my local HMV!), but a fascinating insight into Wilen.
