BBC Radio London - Jumoke Fashola and Guests on the London Jazz Scene

I couldn't face music last night so I went for talk radio. Switched the radio on before doing the washing up. Expected to hear something about the news and so also expected to immediately switch it off again.

As it turned out, Jumoke Fashola was sitting in for Eddie Nestor on a BBC Radio London phone-in. The subject was jazz and it was interesting and informative. I therefore kept with it.

A lot of stuff here about the trials of being a jazz musician today - how to be recognised, possible problems with the "jazz" word, the PR obligations, the pressures on purists to crossover, the success of people with innovative approaches - jazz for three year olds?!, the remaining importance of performing live, improvements at London clubs in the last 20 years, the role of kingmakers - "I listen to about 200 cds and pick 2 or 3 performers for my club", the feeling in many musicians that they will need to keep their music as just a hobby, giving new artists a break and the age factor, the role of the London Jazz Festival.

Makes me think that it is better sometimes being among audience rather than in performance. Something of the awe and mystery of music can be retained there.

Anyhow, better than the average phone-in! Relevant discussion starts at 1 hour and 28 minutes.
