In the still of the night

...fellow zombies, vampires and body snatchers ... while you loiter mid the tombstones of the graveyard slot ...

Gerry Mulligan was one of the finest baritone saxophonists in jazz history, bringing an effortless grace to the large instrument, enhanced by his skill as a composer and arranger. Brian Priestley joins Alyn Shipton to select Mulligan's key recordings, from his "pianoless" quartet through his sextets and ten-piece bands to the Concert Jazz Band. The music ranges from the early 1950s until the 1990s, and includes Mulligan's final, emotionally charged recordings.

Claire Martin with concert music from the 'father of Ethiopian jazz' Mulatu Astatke with his Steps Ahead band recorded at this year's Glasgow Jazz Festival. There's also a rare chance to hear Mulatu speaking of his memories of meeting and working with jazz legend Duke Ellington in Ethiopia. Plus Kevin Le Gendre interviews jazz guitarist Pat Metheny in celebration of his new solo record 'What's It All About' which sees the master guitarist re-imagine works by Paul Simon, Henry Mancini, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Lennon and McCartney.
no disrespect to the programme makers but yours truly is spitting blood at the new schedule, an utterly gratuitous offence to the jazz audience .... if it comes to online catch ups for jazz £3 can not live with NPR, the point surely was to be able to listen on the radio!

..er not for me, his Concert Jazz Band was an awesome ensemble, given eye teeth to have heard it live .... excellent programme good coverage most of the essentials and a very civil chat ... no dropping of standards then in these cut budget graveyard productions!

if not known this is essential Jeru for his fans [and Cook & Morton i think]

        Jazz Library~Gerry Mulligan

Anyone listen to this in its new graveyard slot? It was an excellent programme which I recorded via FREEVIEW.
Gerry Mulligan's Concert Jazz Band recorded a marvellous version of George Russell's 'All About Rosie' on their hard-to-find 1961 album 'A Concert in Jazz'(VERVE MGV 8415). It also appeared on Mulligan's 'Verve Jazz Masters 36'(523 342-2).
        Here's George Russell's original version:-

Agree, another very good programme,'tho I missed the first half because I forgot the new (Bloody awful) time! Suggestions? Mulligan's 57 album pairing with Stan Getz which is a gem (they swopped their horns on a few tracks), "The Age of Steam" (surprisingly left out?) and Gerry with Ben Webster and Jimmy Witherspon (at his peak) live, from 1959. There's a beaut of a BLUUUUZEY Mulligan solo on "Trouble in Mind" from memory on that album.

          BN.

I have rquested a Elmo Hope track on JRR for the all R3 (old) jazzbored revolutionaries. WE will see....

Btw is this a new programme or repeat? Or maybe there was a previous Jazz File on JM?

Still waiting for my last two requests to JRR.

The Mulligan programme was new. Next week's on Barney Wilen is also new. Then two weeks of repeats and then two new programmes including the one on Michel Portal that I promised on another thread. The system will be roughly two new shows and two repeats per month from now on, though we have quite a few new ones during the London Jazz festval and I will be out and about doing live interviews with (among others) Regina Carter and David Sanborn (details on the London Jazz Fest bit of the R3 website). You may be thinking that we'd done Mulligan earlier owing to the Chico Hamilton, Bob Brookmeyer and Chet Baker editions of JL.

Courtesy of The Library of Congress

Gerry Mulligan has a large exhibit directly opposite the room in The Library of Congress where you can audit all recorded treasures therein.

(As I discovered when I did research on Jack London...Martin Eden novel).

They've not put this Saturday's listing up yet? I was lucky thought to have my Eddie Lang request played last week: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b014m38j#synopsis

I'd love to be able to do that, but as a listener in Scotland I no longer get Radio 3 via Freeview during those hours. :( A double whammy.
