    JL 3.ix.11 Lalo Schifrin

plenty of material for Gillespie and Third Stream fans in the Schifrin prog and no doubt the odd latin tinge ...

    Oooh yes, that looks interesting.

Some of his soundtrack work for Clint Eastwood is very good indeed (thinking here of the Dirty Harry series) which incorporates a lot of jazz elements.

NP: Lalo Schifrin, Main Title from Dirty Harry
all words are trains for moving past what really has no name

... i've listened twice, this programme was a revelation .... i confess to not hearing the Gillespiana and being a bit sniffy about later Gillespie ... not any more! the Hodges album was a delight .... [not sure about 4cds of symphony orhestra and jazz 'vignettes' but now wiling to try it] .... Schifrins scoring and attack in gillespiana is amazing stuff ....

really amused by the account of his relationship with the 'mystic' Messiaen at the Paris Conservatoire ...

Schifrin can easily be off the personal radar .... not any more; a gem of a prog, thanks Alyn ....

        Yes, I was amused too.

I can only imagine that Messiean, in his well-known dislike of Jazz, and being a staunch Christian, felt that jazz was the work of the devil.

However nice timing in that this programme followed some very religious works in the preceding programme.

Dizzy's 'Gillespiana' was recently re-issued coupled with a superb quintet version of the suite(minus 'Panamericana') recorded live at Salle Pleyel, Paris, 10 days after the studio big-band version(POLL WINNERS RECORDS PWR 27254).
Discover Gillespiana by Dizzy Gillespie, Dizzy Gillespie & His Orchestra released in 1961. Find album reviews, track lists, credits, awards and more at AllMusic.

Messiean's dislike of jazz must have infected the hierarchy at BBC Radio 3!
