Sat 8 July
5pm - J to Z
Julian Joseph presents highlights of trumpeter Nick Walter's 20 May concert at the First Street Main Stage at the Manchester Jazz Festival. Walters blends spiritual, modal and eastern jazz together with electronic music. Here he's joined by Tenderlonious (Ed Cawthorne) on reeds, Laurie Lowe on drums, Nim Sadot on bass and Rebecca Nash on piano.
Personal experience of Nick Walters and Rebecca Nash alone make for a strong recommendation to catch this; Ed and Nim are new to me.
10pm - New Music Show
Always worth a listen if often a disappointment - however, this is to draw attention to Japanese pianist Aki Takashi's presence in this particular programme.
12midnight - Freeness
Corey Mwamba with new jazz and improvised music with an adventurous spirit, tonight including Tennessee-born saxophonist and flautist Zoh Amba and an enigmatic track from Old and New Dreams's 1979 self-titled album (their second of two), featuring Don Cherry (trumpet, piano), Dewey Redman (tenor saxophone, musette), Charlie Haden (bass) and Ed Blackwell (drums), which celebrates the work of mentor Ornette Coleman. Plus an excerpt from NYC 1978 - saxophonist Evan Parker's first solo performance in New York City, released this year, 45 years after it was recorded.
Plenty there to attract iconic free jazz aficionados this coming Saturday.
