Bourne again Sharkey-festered Reddin tooth and claw

    Sat 24 June
    5pm - J to Z

Kevin Le Gendre invites Los Angeles-born jazz vocalist and band leader Gretchen Parlato to share some of the music that has inspired her. Plus highlights of a gig given last November by Leeds-based saxophonist and composer Jasmine Myra and her band, recorded for T to Z's Spiritual Jazz Sunday as part of the London Jazz Festival.

Jazz singer Gretchen Parlato shares her inspirations. Plus live music from Jasmine Myra.

    12midnight - Freeness
Corey Mwamba with a playlist including guitarist Chris Sharkey - joined by Matthew Bourne (synthesiser) and Luke Reddin-Williams (drums) for a rock-inspired sonic adventure recorded in abandoned spaces and secret locations across the North of England - and a collboration between percussion Carlo Costa and contrabass clarinettist John McCowen.

Corey Mwamba shares improvised music and free jazz to expand our imagination.

    Sun 25 June
    4pm - Jazz Record Requests

    Some Hope!

David Ornette Cherry's name should rightly conjure associations, given that a track of his is due for broadcasting as part of today's J to Z, given that he passed away aged 64 in London last November as a result of an asthma attack. He was a son of Don Cherry, who, from reading up, played piano , keyboards, exotic flutes and so on, and was it seems particularly associated with a style of Afrobeat that owed to that of the pioneer Fela Kuti. I have to admit to never having heard of him until now.

Today's J to Z was introduced as "a second chance to hear" and was originally broadcast last December.

Much of the fare on offer having proved pretty soporific, I must have drifted off the first time around as well!

The [R] normally present at the bottom of a repeat programme in Radio Times wasn't.

Yes, after last week's improvement it was back to usual with J to Z's bland and uninspiring stuff.

Wonderful! Having just done my mad dog of Englishman around the block stroll, I shall be sheltering from this heat in me cave this afternoon.
