Sat 3 June
5pm - J to Z
Julian Joseph with new and classic jazz, today featuring a tribute to influential Pittsburg-born jazz pianist and composer Ahmad Jamal, who died last month, aged 92. Featuring both celebrated pieces and rarer offerings, including his work with Art Tatum and Miles Davis and collaborations with Donald Byrd, Idris Muhammad and others. Plus highlights of an interview from 2002, and personal reflections from contemporary pianists Vijay Iyer, Hiromi and Robert Glasper.
12midnight - Freeness
Corey Mwamba with new improvised music from makers and collectives responding to art, featuring British pianist Robert Mitchell [] and his band Flame and a live performance from Henry Threadgill []. Plus music that inspires poetry, with Ed Shipsey, Jordan Muscatello and Petero Kalulé (aka petals) conjuring a twilight zone between sleep and waking states*.
*Describes me half the time these days.
Also composer Errolyn Wallen is featured on This Cultural Life - 7.15pm Radio 4 For those who don't know Errollyn, she happens to be Belize-born, a composer who has worked with Mike and Kate Westbrook among other jazz people, whose music (or what I have heard of it) I would describe stylistically as maybe a sort-of latter-day equivalent to William Walton. A few more interesting biographical details on her on the link below:
Great outfit there, Errollyn!
