Wayne will always be with us, his music will live on..

A cracking track from the Messengers Japan concert in 1961

The very track I would have chosen.

I was fortunate enough to see Wayne Shorter on numerous occasions, usually with the later quartet but also with Herbie/ Hooland / Blade and with the string ensemble. There was also an ad hoc group that I also caught in Vienne.

I have to say that the first time I heard the quartet play live was probably one of the best musical experiences I have had. They never disappointed whenever i saw them perform. For me, this was"total" music and, whilst the music he produced in the 1960s is particularly and correctly lauded, I think the quartet from the 2000s was one of the great bands of all time. It really re-restablished the bar for acoustic jazz.

As far as hos capabilities as a composer, I just think that his ability to think differently from everyone else ensured that he was writing music for smaller groups which challenged the tenets of Be-bop and AABA forms. I would much rather hear musicians tackle his work than hackneyed standards. The music presents a challenge and, as has been said above, it is foreever.

Wayne Shorter, my best friend, left us with courage in his heart, love and compassion for all, and a seeking spirit for the eternal future. He was ready for his rebirth. As it is with every human being, he is irreplaceable . . .

WKCR is now playing some recordings from the Barbican of the late quartet (I suppose we can now call it that). As Ian has said above, one of the great small-group jazz ensembles of all time.

Well, this is confusing. The wikipedia article seems confused about whether the album was recorded in 2010 or 2011, in the studio or live. I have the CD booklet which isn't much help...

Lest we forget, and although Wayne apparently got tired of Messengers concerts, "That Bash Bash etc", the incendiary "Free for All", tearing the roof off!

This is a collection of tribute programmes to Wayne - text is English, but spoken presentation unfortunately not....

                                ....a fine figure of a man....inspiration....

....this may seem a strange choice, but it is the first time [first track] I ever heard of Wayne....in my early twenties - my mate Pete brought around a vinyl he wanted me to tape....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiN-myhPEdI

....we live at the same time - as great people do great things....
