My first experience of USA was being dropped off by a BBC producer Ian McGahey(?) of Omnibus [who i met on the plane] on Sunset Strip at the top of a hill with either a train carriage or tram carriage being used as a diner....oppossite was a hotel or something with a most unsightly but interesting ventilation system on the outside of the building (galvanised but slowly rusting prob' from 50's)....instant culture shock with heat and the industrial estate layout of roads....and distance to my next meet at Sevulvida Drive [if i remember correctly] (prob' don't]....or thinking again maybe it was Hollywood Blvde....
R3 hates jazz and is trying to kill off jazz on the radio

Well, it turns out that I just never hear Jazz Library any more. The new time is just not a time I'll ever be listening to the radio. I can't record it off Freeview, since I'm in Scotland and Radio3 isn't on Freeview during the hours that BBC Alba airs. And I don't listen to the radio on Listen Again on my computer, as I don't find it convenient, comfortable, or of satisfactory sound quality.
I gave it some months to see if I could retrain myself; I tried the Listen Again thing, but I just find I never actually do it.
It's a shame, since Saturday afternoon was the only scheduled listening I did on Radio 3, being more of a jazz fan than a "classical" fan. I did tune in randomly at other times, but now I find the other programmes I happen upon aren't really to my taste in style of presentation. Now that I don't have World Routes and Jazz Library to keep me listening through Saturday afternoon, I even find I usually miss JRR.
So, goodbye Radio 3. It was nice while it lasted.

i am sorry for your predicament Pilchardman which i find tragic ..... i suspect [eg from the lower reaction to threads on the programmes] that many share your difficulties and displeasure with the situation of jazz on R3 and listen much less if at all to the station's jazz outputAccording to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Does anyone know if the listening figures for Jazz Library have changed much since it moved to the midnight slot? It's an excellent programme, but I must confess I haven't heard it often recently.

However to be honest, and admitting that Jazz Library at its best has produced some stunning programmes, I don't think you missed much last Saturday - Harry James playing Flight of the Bumblebee and other show stoppers. I guess an archivist might find this type of programme of some interest, but I just felt it was a waste of a one hour Jazz programme.

So - it it true then what it says in Jazzwise that Jazz Library is being axed next month?
We have been informed there would be less programmes and more repeats, but not if think that we were losing JL altogether.
That would be a catastrophe in terms of quality jazz presentation on the wireless - Radio 3 or anywhere.

Veteran broadcaster Geoffrey Smith is to step down from presenting Jazz Record Requests, the long running Radio 3 Saturday afternoon listeners’ request show, which he has presented since 1991. Alyn Shipton, who presents Jazz Library until next month when that show is to be axed, takes the Michigan-born Smith’s place with a plan to draw in a broader, and slightly younger listenership to the venerable JRR, Radio 3’s most listened-to jazz show.
Smith is believed to be about to begin a new show on Radio 3 called Geoffrey's Jazz.
and could well incur the wrath of the station’s fearsome lobbying group the Friends of Radio 3.
"Geoffrey Smith is an important part of the BBC Radio 3 jazz presenting team," a Radio 3 spokesperson says. "His new show Geoffrey’s Jazz will launch later this year and will be a personal view of jazz, its history, its players and key themes. With Alyn Shipton taking over Jazz Record Requests, Radio 3 continues to be committed to jazz across the station with the same number of shows dedicated to exploring this important genre.”Jazzwise, the UK's biggest selling jazz monthly and the leading English language jazz magazine in Europe, has changed the way jazz magazines look and think with a stunning editorial and design package that reaches out to both the new jazz audience and established fans – qualities that have led to it winning Jazz Publication of the Year at both the Parliamentary Jazz Awards and the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Awards, and Best Jazz Media at the Jazz FM Awards.
it must be true they haven't told usAccording to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.
