X-rated Freeness or just Hammer clavier?

    Sat 4 Feb
    5pm - J to Z

Julian Joseph with fine new jazz alongside classics of the genre. Plus guests and exclusive sessions and gigs, today featuring an interview with young US piano virtuoso James Francies, who already has released two acclaimed albums for Blue Note Records. Here he digs into some formative influences, among them Art Tatum. Plus highlights of a concert by saxophonist Emma Rawicz, recorded specially for J to Z [I]in November at the London Jazz Festival./I]

US piano virtuoso James Francies on his inspirations, plus live music from Emma Rawicz.

    12midnight - Freeness
Corey Mwamba with improvised music marked by a pioneering spirit, including Marta Wareli's grainy and sinuous sound world on acoustic piano and a piece by Eleonor Sandresky which takes the evocative imagery of Mary Oliver's poetry as cues for improvisation. Plus the Tara Clerkin Trio with a heady mix of hip-hop, drum 'n' bass and glitching free jazz.

Corey Mwamba presents new pieces of music from experimental pianists.

Just to thank Alyn again for my French Buck Clayton JRR request today, that's such a brilliant little track and band. And for some reason things sound even better over the "radio"! Direct to C90 of course.

And the Louis Stewart track was also very fine, and I laughed out loud at the Doug Dobbell "Miles" anecdote. (Sorry). So, a fine afternoon!

"Dobell's record shops were forced to close in late 1980, when the area was redeveloped.[7] He died of a heart attack in 1987, aged 69, while visiting a jazz festival in Nice, France" - Wiki
