Thanks francisco. I remember Ottilie well, and the Barber band of the fifties. I'll be watching.

Not what I expected; nothing so tragic. I'd like to add that her singing gave me and my few jazz friends inspiration to pursue our interest in Blues and Jazz. We had a practice room in the shadow of what is now Free Derry Wall - the only gable of that era (and area) still standing - and the first number our infant band tried was a twelve-bar blues. Ottilie was one of us and we were proud of what someone said in her praise -'The little white Irish girl with the dark brown voice'. I heard something like that said during the programme too. I'm glad so many recordings have survived, and that I still have a few - for ever tinged with sadness now.
      Thank you again francisco.

It’s on BBC Four tonight at 21.00

In the meantime just found this clip of band and Ottilie in their prime.
Also for fans of Reslo and STC 4038 microphones.
Who is the obsessive offbeat thigh clapper?
Why is one very tall guy stand stock still while his partner dances around him and
Why does the lady presenter talk like the Queen ?

Thanks EH: I've drawn attention to this programme being part of tonight's sequence of jazz-themed programmes on BBC4 on the Jazz Bored.

Quite a lot of that seems to be previously shown stuff doesn’t it? This looks new (aside from the iPlayer showing ). The Oscar Peterson films are pretty familiar. Though welcome I would love to have seen more about British jazz pianist especially figures like Stan Tracey , Eddie Thompson , George Shearing and the Glasgow pianist who used to play for Ronnie Scott whose name escapes me but my word was he good.

I think I saw this at the time E H,
Not a great song for Ottilie, or a great platform; that audience couldn't clap for nuts - they needed a break. But the band was in good form and Monty's solo in High Society was a respectable effort.
              Thanks for posting.

What a poignant story of a fine singer and such a pity that she stopped working when her Barber days ended.

Saw her with the Barber band at Oxford Town Hall in my mid-teens. Always loved this: think I still have the 7" 45rpm.
