New York Art Quartet ~ Mohawk

One album that's long overdue for re-issue on CD is The New York Art Quartet's 1965 'Mohawk'(FONTANA), featured in 'Lost in the Vaults' in the latest Jazzwise magazine. It's almost criminal that this great music has been unavailable for so long.
Does anyone know who currently owns the rights to the FONTANA label?

looks like youre not alone in your search... and long wait for reissue. there's pages of online discussion on missing 'fontana' back catalogue.

meantime, you'll just have to hum along, and copy the album pics with your very best felt tip pens, by the looks!

Amazing how John Tchicai fitted so easliy into the African Amercian strand of free playing, sounding pretty boppish here at the start.

I've been transferring my vinyl to iTunes, including NYAQ's Mohawk, and I'm pretty gobsmaked at how many Fontana albums I have in the collection. Several of these are in the Fontana New Jazz Series and some old classics repackaged and renamed in the Popular Jazz series (remember them with with the one colour cover but with a pretty girl in full colour and album titles like 'Way Out', 'Warm', 'Cool' & 'Wham').
As I remember they were in the budget price range which is why I've got so many of them, but there was some terrific music on them and they were well packaged in sturdy sleeves.

Thanks to a Jazz Journal reader I've now acquired a CD-R of the NYAQ's 'Mohawk' dubbed from the original Fontana LP. Wonderful stuff and crying out for a proper reissue on CD.
