Deep cuts again? I say bring back Big Ron

    Sat 8 Oct
    5pm - J to Z

Julian Joseph with fine new jazz alongside classics of the genre. Plus gigs, sessions and guests, today featuring an interview with bass player Ron Carter, now 85. The most recorded jazz bassist in history, Ron reflects on his life in jazz and shares some of his most cherished recordings, including a track from his early days with Miles Davis. Plus a celebration of his legacy, with classics and deep cuts from his back catalogue.

Bass legend Ron Carter shares music and memories from his life in jazz.

    12midnight - Freeness
Corey Mwamba with new jazz, tonight including New York-based trio Jessica Pavone, Lukas Koenig and Matt Mottel. There's a return to a golden moment from the 1990s UK improvising scene by way of the Martinican-born vocalist and bassist Francine Luce. Plus a tribute to Arkansas-born jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, who died last month, aged 81.

Corey Mwamba presents impressionistic moments of new and classic improvisation.

    Sun 9 Oct
    4pm - Jazz Record Requests

With Alyn Shipton, today including recordings by Chicago-based pianist and composer Ramsey Lewis, who died last month, aged 87.

    Thurs 11 Oct
    10pm - Free Thinking

Matthew Sweet marks today's 50th anniversary of Miles Davis's LP On the Corner, a work influenced by funk master James Brown and the experimentalism of Stockhausen. He's joined by saxophonist Chelsea Carmichael and producer Bill Laswell.

Matthew Sweet and guests explore Davis's genre-stretching album, released on 11 Oct 1972.

Well, what did people think of this? Pretty good, I thought - if nothing else, I've now decided I must listen to On The Corner in full through my headphones tomorrow (I only listened to some today) - since I've just listened to the programme through headphones, and it helps feeling closer to the music.

One could almost feel the scorn of Laswell responding to Matthew Sweet's often inane - to me - line of questioning: "You speaking to me?" I thought Le Gendre saved it.

Admittedly I lost track of who was saying what - but I guess I've come not to have great expectations about these kinds of programmes. Like I say, it has whetted my appetite for listening to the album - helped by Chelsea Carmichael's description of her deep listening to it, and my own experience of listening to the programme through headphones.

The programme did make me want to listen to 'On The Corner' but a Miles Davis expert, such as Richard Williams, as presenter, would have made a vast improvement.

Dave Liebman talking about the sessions and his no headphones join in contribution/busk. Teo Macero's "more than" role...

I would have to agree. I'm also grateful to Joseph K for reproducing his link to the entire recording from the session elsewhere.
