On the level with a hick hike NOK ad hoc.

A veritable feast of goodies to rouse jaded palettes this week.

    Sat 3 Sept
    5.30PM - J to Z

Jumoké Fashola presents highlights of the recent UK jazz festival We Out Here, including main stage sets from Brazilian jazz-funk act Azymuth, Mancunian saxophonist and spiritual jazz guru Nat Birchall and energetic Latin big band the New Regency Orchestra. And Scottish pianist Fergus McCready - whose album Forest Floor is nominated for this year's Mercury Prize* - shares some of the music that has influenced and inspired him.

*BBC 6 Music Thurs 8 Sept 7pm for Mercury Prize Live.

Live music from Azymuth and more, plus pianist and Mercury nominee Fergus McCreadie.

    10.15pm - BBC Proms
From the Royal Albert Hall, Tom Service introduces a programme featuring the world premiere of a work by Copenhagen-based Norwegian musician Marius Neset.
Marius Neset (saxophones), Ivo Neame (piano), Jim Hart (vibraphone/marimba/percussion), Conor Chapin (double bass), Anton Eger (drums), London Sinfonietta, conductor Geoffrey Paterson.

    Marius Neset -
    Geyser (BBC commission: first performance).

Live at the BBC Proms: Norwegian saxophonist and composer Marius Neset's new work Geyser.

    12midnight - Freeness
Corey Mwamba with new jazz and improvised music, tonight featuring the trio of Ian Wilkinson, Alex Ward and Jem Doulton conjuring up an apocalyptic punk storm complete with lightning-rod guitar riffs, thunderous drums and the unrelenting hail of a blowing horn. Plus a sample of the new album by Eddie Wakili Hick and his group NOK Cultural Ensemble - who celebrate diverse percussive styles from across the African diaspora - and a tribute to US cellist Abdul Wadud, who died last month, aged 75.

Corey Mwamba presents storming free punk and Afro-percussive devotional music

    Sun 4 Sept
    4pm - Jazz Record Requests

Alyn Shipton with a broad spectrum of requests, today including recordings by Laura Jurd, Carmen McCrae and James P Johnson.

11pm - The Voice of the Vibraphone
    New Series: 1/3

Corey Mwamba examines the vibraphone - an instrument he feels is under-appreciated and whose percussive nature and vibrato have led to a perception that it can produce only a homogeneous sound. Featuring recordings by Gary Burton, Red Norvo, Terry Pollard and Walt Dickerson, juxtaposed with more recent keyboard-styled approaches by Mike Manieri and Sasha Berliner.

Corey Mwamba shows us how to listen to an underappreciated instrument with fresh ears.

    Sky Arts TV
6.50pm - New: Brad Mehldau Plays the Beatles

The jazz pianist interprets the repertoire of the Fab Four, featuring interpretations of I Saw Her Standing There and If I Needed Someone among others.

I was surprised to find myself quite liking Laura Jurd's new single (first item on JRR) - jazzed up Vaughan Williams: perhaps she should have called it "Ralph" rather than "Henry" - or "Rafe" as people pronounced it - I never disliked her actual playing, and people such as Mark Lockhart and Dylan Bates on board are good choices if she is now moving into a more collective approach.
