A week's composer goes astray - and Miriam off the wall

I'm posting a day earlier than usual, having as I do stuff on tomorrow.

    Sat 25 June
    5pm - J to Z

Jumoké Fashola presents highlights of a tenth-anniversary tribute concert celebrating trumpeter and educator Abram Wilson (1973-2012) given in May at Church of Sound in east London, curated by Binker Golding and featuring pianist Charlie Stacey and trumpeter Mark Kavuma. And US singer/songwriter Somi (of Rwandan and Ugandan heritage) discusses her album of interpretations of the songs of singer and activist Miriam Makeba.

Vocalist Somi on her inspirations. Church of Sound All-Stars pay tribute to Abram Wilson.

    12midnight - J to Z
Corey Mwamba shares highlights from a night of improvisation at GIOfest, an annual festival at Glaasgow's Centre for Contemporary Art, started in 2002, organised by Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra and held in November and December.

    This is a repeat.

Corey Mwamba shares highlights from a joyful night of improvisation at GIOfest.

    Sun 26 June
    4pm - Jazz Record Requests

Alyn Shipton showcases Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Plus recordings by Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, vocalist Emma Smith and guitarists John McLaughlin and Jim Hall.

*There appears to be some systems fault on this link.

Next week's Composer of the Week is a repeat of the Billy Strayhorn series.

Note that next week's Glastonbury coverage includes the following, which might be of interest, or not:

    Sat 25 June
    BBC4 - 7pm

    Singer-songwriter Celeste.

    Sun 25 June

    BBC2 - 5pm

Including Nubya Garcia among a host of boasts, also an item on the career of Diana Ross.

    BBC4 - 8pm

Herbie Hancock - followed by, er um, C&W star Kacey Musgraves.

You might want to stay tuned at 9pm for Angélique Kidjo, then quickly turn off for Jarvis Cocker's following outfit.

Well I have to say Hats Off to a great edition of J to Z today, with a fine set of quality straight ahead jazz in tribute to Abram Wilson and moving tributes to Miriam and the S African diaspora in America from the singer Somi. Certainly worth staying in for.

I caught Abram Wilson at the Turner Sims and felt his writing was pretty ambitious, albeit influenced by Wynton. i did not have any expectations yet the gig was really enjoyable. For me, one of the strengths of jazz is that you can often be surprisedjust how good the unfamiliar is. Tragedy that he passed so young as he really had a lot to offer.
