    Any new Leeds?

    Sat 18 June
    5pm - J to Z

Jumoké Fashola presents performances from the recent Leeds Jazz Festival, plus music from the Leeds jazz scene and a classic 1940s recording by an inspiring Leeds-born band leader.

Interesting-looking all-female band making an appearance. And by the way for anyone wondering, Caroline Boaden is a very good Fusion drummer, not Art Farmer by another name!

    12midnight - Freeness

Long-distance improv, it says, so should be worth a shout...

Corey Mwamba presents improvised music made through long distance collaborations.

    Sun 19 June
    4pm - Jazz Record Requests

Includes Chick Corea, Hiromi (there are you), Matthew Halsall and Pepper Adams.

Alyn Shipton presents music from Matthew Halsall, Pepper Adams and Hiromi.

I caught snatches of J-Z including the band from Leeds were ripping off Pharoah Sanders and have to admit that it was pretty uninspiring. A lot of the music seemed to recast jazz a summery wall-paper music and I regret that I did not find it too inspiring. The Leeds scene did not seem as rich as the presenter suggested or at least as varied. The Ivy Benson track was dreadful.

Must admit I had never heard of Issie Barratt even though she seems to have been around for a long while. I didn't like the addition of the vocalist but, to be honest, the British jazz scene has been churning out these kinds of big bands for years. The music was ok although I think pretty average.

Yes, I found most of the music on J to Z bland with little impact despite the gushing enthusiasm of the presenter.

I think we're all in agreement on this particular episode. Leeds has (or any rate had) a fine free improv scene the last time I checked.
