    Another enjoyable program.

Despite Matthew Parris, some may be interested in 'Great Lives' today(Radio 4, 4.30pm) which features 'poet, singer and spoken word musician Gil Scott-Heron(1949-2011)'.

Follows on nicely from Brian Jackson's choices on J to Z (April 23), even though I Don't Love Parris in the Springtime - or at any other time! Link to today's programme for after-listening in case missed:

I was fascinated by the Joe Wilder interview. He is a name I have been familiar with but knew nothing about his back story which I found compelling to listen to. It is really interesting to hear this kind of insight in to various bands. The comment about Les Hite's band being a society group was intriguing as it has always been a bit of mystery band for me and a curiosity as it featured T - Bone Walker at one point:-

There is one track they made called "That's the lick" which is supposed to be particularly good yet I have never heard it. There is a death of Les Hite's work on Youtube.

Good programme. The last thing I'd have associated Joe Swift, "TV personality"/"Chelsea Flower Show", is with radicalism - you could say from Ought-To Culture to Horticulture. Gardening can professionally be a very snooty, upmarket, one in which Geraniums and Petunias are looked down on as being part of an underclass. Petunia clerk! When you're one step from Her Maj, his Highness Prince of Wales etc, by way of Alan Titchmarsh, I guess you hive off past associations.

A fascinating programme which transformed my view of Joe Swift.
Malik Al Nasir was also excellent on G S-H and will have to read his book 'Letters to Gil'.
