    Charnett Moffett RIP

Recently read on the Twitter that bass player Charnett Moffett has died, aged 54.

He was the son of Charlie Moffett of the Ornette Coleman trio; his name is a portmanteau of Charlie and Ornette. He played brilliantly on Wynton Marsalis' superb Black Codes of the Underground. I recall an interview he did for DownBeat magazine: his first musical experience was on a tour of Japan with a family group led by his old man. By chance he was given a bass to play in that group. He was big in the 80s and 90s but I don't recall seeing him mentioned much since then.

I was saddened to hea this news. I saw Charnett Moffett with McCoy Tyner's excellent quartet with Bobby Hitcherson and Greg Hutcherson back in the early 2000s and this performnance converted me to being a fan of MT's playing. Moffett played a bowed solo which took on the qualities of a Jimi Hendrix guitar solo. The album they made called "Land of Giants" is also pretty good.

He also is featured on Sony sharrock's "Ask the ages" but I think Moffett's recent output shyed away from Post-bop
