Sat 8 Jan
5pm - J to Z
Kevin Le Gendre sees in 2022 with some exciting new jazz releases, including an album from US vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant that takes her music in a bold new direction, and a celebration of British carnival band and grassroots education initiative Kinetika Bloco. Plus music that inspire and influences British saxophonist Mark Lockheart, who's about to release his latest project, Dreamers - a creative blend of jazz, alt-rock and more.
Is "alt-rock" what we used to call "art rock", e.g. bands such as Slapp Happy and Henry Cow?
6.30 - Opera on 3 from the Met
Never thought I'd be mentioning an opera on the board!
A chance to hear an October 2021 performance of jazz musician and composer Terence Blanchard's Fire Shut Up in My Bones - an adaptation of Charles M Blow's moving memoir, first performed in 2019 at the Opera Theatre of St Louis.
Forgive me for not including the lengthy details - er umm, shouldn't that be "Theater"???
'Round About Midnight -
Freeness
Corey Mwamba shares highlights from a night of improvisation at GIOfest, a festival at Glasgow's Centre for Contemporary Arts organised by Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra.
Nice to see "Improvisers" spelt correctly!
Sun 9 Jan
5pm - Jazz Record Requests
Alyn Shipton presents a broad spectrum of requests, including Hank Jones, Keith Jarrett and Helen Merrill.
Fri 14 Jan
5pm - In Tune
British-Bahraini trumpet player Yazz Ahmed joins Sean Rafferty to perform live in the studio as part of the Yazz Ahmed Quartet ahead of a concert at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London on Monday. Plus the latest arts news.
