Jazz Carols for the Third Sunday of Advent

You won't believe the condescending tosh presented under this morning's Sunday Worship, as stated in the title.

A service of jazz carols from Highfields Church, Cardiff, led by the Rev Dave Gobbett.

When jazz in nothing but name is used as an excuse for adults to be talked platitudes at like wide-eyed 2-year olds obediently sat cross-legged in a semicircle before Teacher, religious broadcasting so-called has reached a new low.

One of the best Jazz carols ever was played on Sarah’s Sunday Morning today - MJQ God rest ye merry gentlemen - many a year since I’ve heard it but it is excellent!

Well Cloughie we did play it on the JRR Christmas show on 15 Dec 2018 - a blink of an eye in Radio 3 terms, given today was the programme's 57th birthday.

I was on the way out of the room when that came on - had to come back in and listen. Good while since I've heard it as well, very much something to put a smile on the face and a spring in the step.

Manfred Mann recorded a version of God Rest Ye Jerry Mental Men in 1963 for his 1966 album of instrumentals, Soul of Mann. I've since heard the MJQ version and I think Manfred's is a direct copy. He must have got John Lewis's permission.

Yes you’re right - the line-up included Mike Hugg on vibes and Jack Bruce on bass.

Jimmy Smith cut a version on his "Christmas Cooking" album. Jimmy doing his thing, big band ring a ding.
