    Abe rounds on his salvants.

    Sat 6 Nov
    5pm - J to Z

Jumoké Fashola with live music from Miami-born vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant, accompanied by collaborator Sullivan Fortner in a concert from earlier this year at San Francisco venue SF Jazz. And US virtuoso guitarist Julian Lage shares inspirations.

    This is a repeat.

Vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant performs live music alongside pianist Sullivan Fortner.

    12midnight - Freeness
Corey Mwamba with new jazz and improvised music, tonight including a work by Australian percussionist Abe Rounds, inspired by an old VHS film of his four-year-old self and drawing on his Polynesian, Sephardic Jew, Iraqi and Hungarian heritages. Saxophonist Catherine Sikora invites listeners to re-evaluate conventional ideas about strength and weakness, through extended tonal explorations. And soprano Alya Al-Sultani and turntablist Mariam Rezaei join forces in a live performance that gives new voice to Middle Eastern poetry, hip-hop and noise.

The names seem familiar but there's no indication if this is a repeat.

Corey Mwamba presents adventurous percussion, tonal sax and a live set.

    Sun 7 Nov
    4pm - Jazz Record Requests

A forward to next week's London Jazz festival.

    Fri 12 Nov - BBC4
9pm - Keith Jarrett: the Art of Improvisation

A profile of the acclaimed jazz pianist, famous for his marathon solos, revealing a classical side to the contemporary musician, who plays and records his own work as well as that of Bach, Mozart and Shostakovitch. With contributions from Jarrett himself, producer Manfred Eicher, performers Jack DeJohnette, Gary Peacock, Chick Corea and Jan Garbarek, and footage from concerts dating back to the 1960s, involving a variety of artists and ensembles, including Miles Davis and the Charles Lloyd Quartet.

A fascinating portrait of Keith Jarrett, whose work straddles classical music and jazz.

    Followed by:

10.30pm - Jazz Voice 2021: from the London Jazz Festival

Basically Guy Barker and the EFG London Jazz Festival Orchestra covering what it says are jazz classics from the movies, hosted by Jumoké. Just think - you can watch this with your TV sound turned down while at the same time listening to Radio 3!

    Fri 12 Nov
    11pm - J to Z Late

Kicking off eight hours of jazz-themed programmes to mark the start of the London Jazz Festival. Jumoké Fashola presents a special live edition of Radio 3's Saturday afternoon jazz show, broadcast from the opening night of the festival. On stage at Pizza Express jazz club in Holborn are American piano star Christian Sands and his trio, plus three UK acts: dynamic trumpeter Sheila Maurice-Grey (aka Ms Maurice), saxophonist Xhosa Cole and drummer Romarna Campbell.

Exclusive sets from Christian Sands, Ms Maurice, Romarna Campbell and Ant Law

Further jazz programmes for nocturnalists ensue throughout the night to 6 am on Saturday.

I now notice that I have omitted next Friday's 7.30pm Radio 3 in Concert, though this is re-broadcast at 10.30 on BBC4 and mentioned in my listing.

The Jarrett film is Mike Dibb's 2005 documentary. As I recall it, Ian Carr (who was still alive and relatively well at the time) was involved. It's a particularly good documentary in that Jarrett allowed Mike to film him in concert - a privilege he seldom granted, and I suspect most of us who saw him live remember the tirades agains photographers!

I can vouch for it as being a really good documentary.

Must admit I share Jarrett's disdain for wannabe photographers/cinematographers at concerts. I was at the last concert at Sage Gateshead before the first lockdown in March 2020. Gabriela Montero was giving a solo recital. At the end she gave one of her signature improvisations as an encore, explaining it would only exist in the moment. It was very moving, until some clown few rows in front decided they would take it out of the moment and record it on their mobile phone in full view of all those sitting behind!

Excellent JRR again today, Tapscott et al. And a reminder how great the first Miles quintet was (yes, I know there was a second!), how integrated and contrasting they were, and Paul's essential bass figures, Red Garlands piano. And Miles on top. Cor blimey.

Just bumping this up as now being on for any insomniac night birds. Some good stuff up to this point.

An excellent film on Keith Jarrett.
Must be the same Mike Dibb who did the John Berger 'Ways Of Seeing' series on BBC TV back in 1972:

The very same Mike Dibb who also did Ian Carr's doc on Miles Davis around the same time as the Jarrett. Ian was very eager to get those two programmes completed, aware as he was of his own faltering condition.
