Simon Spillett - "Hip! Tubby Hayes 1965"...

Interesting & longish piece on Simon Spillett's blog about Tubby Hayes in 1965, a period of personal and artistic "turmoil". Raises some issues applicable more widely about continuity and change, how that's achieved when you're already established (too established?), and the local constraints. Hayes heard Coltrane in New York and it impacted heavily on him, he was perhaps the best known of British saxophonists with a growing US
& international audience and work potential etc etc...how to reconcile all that when your personal life is a mess...

Tubby Hayes Live,1966, "Night and Day" (Phil Seaman drums), a different Tubby and one that sounds like Sonny Rollins (and Joe Henderson) were kicking in...http://youtu.be/_VL--uOTnlo
