3 stars or VSOP? No deterrence, just hop along!

    Sat 28 Aug
    5pm - J to Z

Kevin Le Gendre welcomes trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard, who cut his teeth playing with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra and the Jazz Messengers before fronting numerous acts including his current band the E-Collective. Blanchard, who has scored many films for Spike Lee, shares his inspirations.

Acclaimed trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard shares his jazz inspirations.

    12midnight - Freeness
In this programme from last September, guitarist George Burt and singer Ciona Cassidy, introduce their then new record Rain Shadow, and there's a track from pianist Sylvie Courvoisier's then new trio album. Presented by Corey Mwamba.

    Sun 29 Aug
    4pm - Jazz Record Requests

Alyn Shipton with requested recordings by Lambert, Hendricks and Ross*, Art Tatum and Kenny Burrell.

*In tribute to the late, great Charles Fox, I always feel their group name sounds like a firm of solicitors.

Alyn Shipton presents jazz records of all styles as requested by you.

Just remember, when in "society" company, which way to pass the port round the table, or be found out to be just another of the plebs.

Just a reminder that this weekend is Charlie Parker's birthday (Sunday August 29). If you're thinking of sending him a card. He was born in 1920 so he would have been 101. Just think of the royalties. Jazz 88.3, San Diago is currently running a Parker related weekend, its very good.

I can only surmise that Joanna McGregor's note-for-note version of Errol's Bounce got on JRR on the strengths of her past collaborations with the likes of Django Bates. Much as I like Ms McGregor, performing a transcription ain't jazz, in my opinion, but a beginner's exercise.

Or maybe just making a point about Tatum baffling classical transcribers? Lovely to see your open spirited listening…

An absorbing JRR, lots of different types of Jazz.

I eventually came to the conclusion that the programme might have been expanded to 1.5 hours or 2 hours, to give the listener a better opportunity to absorb a track, before being somersaulted into the next.

It's in the nature of the programme I know, just saying....

It would be very diifficult to plan a programme based on requests to some notion of absorbability. I would think.

Just noticed that George Lewis's 'Minds in Flux' is on BBC Proms(BBC4, Thursday, 2 Sep, 7pm).
Presumably the same George Lewis that recorded 'Homage To Charles Parker' in 1979?

The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra returns for its second Prom of the season, pairing Beethoven’s scintillating concert aria ‘Ah! perfido’ with his multilayered Second Symphony – plus a highly charged world premiere from American composer George Lewis.

I am sure it is he. Always confused with George Lewis the New Orleans jazz revivalist from the 1940s. I missed listening to this particular Prom, so will give it a watch on Thursday. Normally I prefer getting my head down and listening to watching, even where showmanship is an important part of the act; but in instances of this kind it can be instructive to observe ensembles relatively unused to performing music of this kind coping, or not as the case may be. Opinions seemed a bit mixed in the forum discussion on this Prom.

A second thought is that whenever the more successfully innovative jazz people apply their concepts within "classical parameters" the results tend to be more interesting than when classical composers venture into jazz territory.
