    Lauren order Kinsella

    Sat 3 July
    5pm - J to Z

Julian Joseph pays tribute to iconic trumpeter and singer Louis Armstrong to mark Tuesday's 50th anniversary of his death, aged 70. Featuring classic recordings and lesser-known gems that showcase Armstrong's unique talent and enduring influence. And vocalist Lauren Kinsella (of London-based act Snowpoet) shares some of the vocal innovators who have inspired her own highly creative approach, from Shirley Horn to Theo Bleckmann. King Louis the First of Britain is on Tuesday at 4pm on Radio 4.

I can vouch for Lauren - a singular voice now established from the post 2010 generation, working in the across-the-piece lineage of such as Norma Winstone and Maggie Nicols.

Julian Joseph pays tribute to Pops. Plus Lauren Kinsella’s inspirations.

    12midnight - Freeness
Corey Mwamba revisits an archive performance by a ten-piece ensemble led by Devon-born saxophonist John Surman, recorded in 1969 as a one-off broadcast for German public radio. Plus a solo piano piece by Bheki Mseleku, and the Australian Art Ensemble collaborates with sound artist Shoeb Ahmad in an exploration of her teenage experiences.

This is the much-anticipated 1969 broadcast that had to be postponed.

An exuberant recording from 1969 with a ten-piece ensemble led by saxophonist John Surman.

Good to see Lauren on J to Z, some boardee insomniacs may remember we were presenting her own music back in 2018 on the programme that R3 cancelled. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0b9ym1h

Thin gruel, I have to say, sadly.

Following up from Alyn's prompt on today's JRR, this was the Airelle Besson (July 4) - sadly no longer available.

Here is one of Norma Winstone's numerous versions of Steve Swallow's "Ladies in Mercedes":
From 1999's "Like Song, Like Weather," this initially meditative but ultimately fevered rendition of Steve Swallow's by now oft-recorded Latin jazz standard ...

And the entire 1971 recording of "Edge of Time", from which today's track was taken. Well worth listening in its entirety

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

And maybe I can add to that Norma’s conversation with me that includes Edge of Time: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00vhwvd

Not a fan of that voice.
