    Safe houses from heavy drones.

    Sat 22 May
    5pm - J to Z

Jumoké Fashola presents a home session from tuba virtuoso Daniel Herskedal featuring three new works recorded in lockdown in Norway. And US pianist Aaron Parks shares music that has inspired him.

Two of the UK's finest players perform material in tribute to the late Chick Corea.

    12midnight - Freeness
Corey Mwamba with new music including lockdown-induced inertia expressed in heavy drones and restless drums by Sarah Heneghan, Electronic artist SORBET presents a cinematic sci-fi-sounding duet with double bassist Jack Kelly. Plus a track from the latest Safehouse Lockdown Sessions.

    Sun 23 May
    4pm - Jazz Record Requests

Alyn Shipton with Latin jazz from vibes Dave Pike, big band sounds from Les Brown and his Band of Renown, and a track from bassist Paula Gardiner. Plus a celebration of Humphrey Lyttelton (1921-2008) to mark the centenary of his birth.

    11pm - The Harp's Journey, with Catrin Finch: 3/3
This final instalment looks at the eclecticism of the harp including its place in jazz and folk music, its experimental uses by Rhodri Davies, and a transcription by Lavinia Meijer of music by Philip Glass.

Catrin Finch's travels take an adventurous turn as she shows the harp in new territories.

All next week Composer of the Week is a repeat of the fine series on Mary Lou Williams (1910-1981)

Not sure how safe one's house would be if one of these Silly Drones flew into it...

The fact that there is talk about drones doing door-to-door deliveries is mind-boggling and probably deserving of a thread of its own. Just picture this! - air traffic control not managing to, people having to dodge being hit, others intercepting them with catapults, butterfly nets, etc

And that'd be Paula Gardiner on JRR not her male counterpart...

I get an A minus for that typo - now duly corrected, thanks Alyn.

'Dark Matter: A History of the Afrofuture' on BBC4 tonight at 9pm. Could be interesting with Sun Ra featured:

How and why black artists, from Jean-Michel Basquiat to Grace Jones, use the sci-fi genre.

Truly astonishing and wonderful programme - so much to learn from, so useful to one's pauce undestanding. The Sun Ra was from the 1973 Space is the Place.

Robert Mitchell has flagged up the programme link on Facebook - well worth checking out for a replay, and the summary write-up is very good indeed, too.

I really can't over-emphasise how good this series on Mary Lou was, and urge a re-listen, especially to today's episode, which I seem to have missed out for some reason first time around. In it you will hear anticipations of Dick Twardzik that might not have otherwise occurred to one. This lady was proof in huge measure of the idea that it is always possible to stay open to new developments in music while staying true to roots; one weeps but marvels too at how she managed to cope with the terrible indignities and cruelties inflicted on her by bandleaders and partners. Mr Thumwood will find much to expand his love and knowledge of the Swing period in particular. One of the best COTWs.

i am sure that I heard most of this the first time it was on. From my understanding, I think the issues with Williams cut both ways and I believed that she was supposed to have had a boastful nature which did not sit well with her contemporaries. Regardless of that, I am a fan. I was surprised you allude to band leaders inflicting indignities on her as I assume you are alluding to Andy Kirk. My opinion was that Kirk was supposed to be something of a gent. For what it is worth, the work produced by Kirk's band in the mid-late thirties and largely on the back of MLW is amongst the finest jazz of that era - almost on a par with Basie's work of the same time and Ellington's 1940's work which both set the benchmark for that era.
