    Junior Mance RIP..

I've just seen this on Organissimo...
"Reported on Alvin Queen's Facebook page that Junior Mance died earlier today at home."

I've always really liked Junior's playing. One of the first jazz LPs I bought was his "Live at Village Vanguard" on Riverside. And he was a key part of one of my favourite Dizzy groups with Les Spann. I remember Alyn doing a very good Jazz Library with him back when. I'll dig it out.

    RIP Junior.

I saw him play at The Anvil in Basingstoke back in the 1990s. From recollection, the drummer was the bloke from Stacey Kent's group at the time.

Humph styled him 'World Tremolo Champion' for one of his solos. Rememebered with affection.

It was "Smokey Blues" from the Village Vanguard album, a track much played in my teenage "Soul Jazz" years! http://youtu.be/SqJRh9YDntA
BIG tremelo chord chorus at 3.52!

Mance was always our schooldays hard bop favourite pianist, I remember. Sad to say my interests moved on from that area - for decades, and he slipped from my notice. I was even surprised to realise he was still living until now....

That's it, a real cracker of a performance.
