    Frank Kimbrough RIP...

"Frank Kimbrough, a pianist of unerring taste and touch, a composer drawn to flowing ethereality, and an improviser steeped in the art of epiphany, died on Wednesday at his home in Long Island City, N.Y.

He was 64. Maryanne de Prophetis, his wife of 31 years, said the likely cause was a heart attack.

Kimbrough was a consummate sideman, and a seasoned bandleader who worked most often in an elastic trio with bass and drums. For more than 25 years, he held down a crucial chair in the Maria Schneider Orchestra — appearing on all but one of Schneider’s nine albums, including Data Lords, the acclaimed two-disc opus released in 2020..." WBGO.

I only became of him through the Herbie Nichols connection, but he was a very fine player apart from that.
    RIP.

I met both Ben Allison and Frank Kimbrough after the Herbie Nichol's project tour in 2001. Both were really nice blokes and FK was especially enthusiastic when I told him that i was going to Vienne later that year. Sometime afterwards, I saw him play at Vienne with Maria Schneider in one of the best concerts I have heard there. He was also a regular contributor on the old All about Jazz chatroom where he came across as both generous and genuine.

He was one of the few musicians to have recorded the complete works of Thelonious Monk and also had a trio with Paul Motian on drums in the early 2000s which was highly reated. Really shocked by this news.

Very sad that we have lost Frank, he was a fine pianist and the work he did to publicise Herbie Nichols work has been invaluable in spreading the word. He also discovered and recorded some previously unknown compositions by Herbie.
Frank also produced the "Monk's Dream" 6cd set of every known Monk composition, this was an inspired project and one of the best tributes to monk, every track offers novel and interesting takes on Monk's great compositions. This set is the best album(s) I have bought this year

      Here is "Friday the 13th"
