    Gendre assignments and Taurus attractions.

    Sat 19 Dec
    5pm - J to Z

Kevin Le Gendre presents jazz highlights of 2020 including standout releases and memorable session recordings. And experimental guitarist Mary Halvorsen shares some of the music that inspires her.

Standout albums, memorable session tracks and Mary Halvorson’s inspirations.

    Round about midnight -
    Freeness

Corey Mwamba presents music that brings light in times of darkness. Night turns into day with a ritualistic awakening from the Mexican group Produtziones Aldabar. Peruvian artist Miguel Flores explores pachacuti - an Andean concept of renewal, rebirth and reversal - on his 1983 album Primitivo. With music from Sun Ra's symphonic jazz album The Pleiades, which is dedicated to the nearest star cluster to Earth, the constellation Taurus.

Corey Mwamba presents music that brings light in times of darkness.

No Jazz Record Requests on Sunday to celebrate the winter solstice, I'm afraid. Not even Henry Lowther's affecting arrangement of Gustav Holst's In The Deep Midwinter. .

The following caught my eye - no further details but it looks interesting:

    Tues 2 Dec
    PBS America TV
    1pm - Jazz: four editions

    6.10pm - Jazz

A period of transition in the 1950s as the spotlight fell on rock 'n' roll, with Elvis Presley, Duke Ellington and Miles Davis making waves on the music scene,

    7.30pm -
A reflection on the decreasing popularity of jazz in the 1960s, as more and more people started listening to rock music.

    Christmas Eve - Radio 4
    11.30am - My Favourite Things

Andrew McGibbon explores how My Favourite Things from The Sound of Music established itself thanks to a 1961 recording by jazz pioneer John Coltrane, his version elevating the song to a standalone masterpiece. With contributions from BBC Jazz Musician of the Year Xhosa Cole, music academic Lewis Porter and saxophonist Iain Ballamy. (Repeated Sunday 27 Dec, 8pm).

Er, shouldn't that be My Favorite Things??

This seems to be a compilation of a series that PBS has run occasionally:: https://www.pbsamerica.co.uk/series/jazz/

Highly recommendable, including in-depth studies of Charlie Parker and Coltrane, if I am correct.

Seem to have overlooked those, so thanks for that inflamation, Quarky!

Just thought I'd bump this up, in case there's anyone at home, and not queuing outside their local St Sprees, Tescles, Rod Liddles, Asdles, or other Brands available for Lou Rawls:

That's sad: I can't get PBS America on my Freeview set-up. All I get is "Data Service Only"

Commiserations - don't understand that. I get PBS on freeview channel 91, and PBS+1 on 93. Using an antenna aimed at Crystal Palace transmitter (that's near you?)

Yep - oddly enough it's working now. I can't get any CH 93, but never mind!

Edit: It's the ken Burns series, I see now!
