A Noble cause, and welcome to the Naibo hood.

    Sat 5 Dec
    5pm - J to Z

Kevin Le Gendre celebrates the centenary of the birth of innovative jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck (1920-2012). He is joined by Brubeck's eldest son Darius, an accomplished pianist in his own right, who shares memories of his father and some of the music that inspires him including a remarkable live recording of the Dave Brubeck Quartet that sees him experimenting and pushing it right to the edge.

Kevin Le Gendre presents a Dave Brubeck special with guest Darius Brubeck.

    12midnight - Freeness
Italian guitarist Francesca Naibo. who explores both the instrument's acoustic and electric possibilities, talks about her debut solo album Namatoulee. There is also music by Ariana Tikao, a leading figure in the revival of traditional Maori instruments taonga puoro. PLus a call-and-response between pianist Liam Noble and saxophone player Paul Dunmall from a quartet album that also features Mark Sanders on drums and John Edwards on bass.

The Noble/Dunmall/Edwards/Sanders band operates territory not far removed from Paul and Keith Tippett's late and much-missed Mujician, to give an idea.

Italian guitarist Francesca Naibo talks about her debut solo album Namatoulee.

    Thurs 10 Dec
    10.45pm - The Essay: Secret Admirers - 4/5

Radio 3 presenters share personal stories of the composer who has inspired them the most, continuing with Jumoké Fashola's celebration of American singer/songwriter and activist Nina Simone (1933-2003), whose music and life story helped her to find her own voice.

"Jumoké?" "Nah - she found it off her own bat".

(New variant on very old and corny joke).
