Kevin Le Gendre celebrates the centenary of the birth of innovative
jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck (1920-2012). He is joined by Brubeck's eldest son Darius, an accomplished pianist in his own right, who shares memories of his father and some of the music that inspires him including a remarkable live recording of the Dave Brubeck Quartet that sees him experimenting and pushing it right to the edge.
12midnight - Freeness
Italian guitarist Francesca Naibo. who explores both the instrument's acoustic and electric possibilities, talks about her debut solo album Namatoulee. There is also music by Ariana Tikao, a leading figure in the revival of traditional Maori instruments taonga puoro. PLus a call-and-response between pianist Liam Noble and saxophone player Paul Dunmall from a quartet album that also features Mark Sanders on drums and John Edwards on bass.
The Noble/Dunmall/Edwards/Sanders band operates territory not far removed from Paul and Keith Tippett's late and much-missed Mujician, to give an idea.
