    More Sonny ...

Jazz Times..."In the spring of 1967, Sonny Rollins went on a European tour with two of his favorite musicians, bassist Ruud Jacobs and drummer Han Bennink. During one May week in the Netherlands, the trio took part in a televised performance at the Go-Go Club in Loosdrecht, a concert at the Arnhem Academy of Visual Arts, and a recording session at VARA Studio 5 in Hilversum. Although each one of these appearances was documented on tape, none of the recordings were ever publicly heard—until now. On December 4, in partnership with the Nederlands Jazz Archief and with Rollins’ own official sanction, Resonance Records will issue the two-CD Rollins in Holland: The 1967 Studio & Live Recordings, the archival label’s first release by the tenor saxophone legend. (A limited-edition three-LP version of the album will be available at independent retailers for Record Store Day’s Black Friday on November 27.)

    It's good Newk Day.

Rollins and Bennink* - two conjurers with space, time and timbre. Should be a fascinating get-together.

*I can hear a certain presenter of the time saying, "A pairing that sounds like a firm of upholsterers".

Sonny Rollins in Holland 1969...a mini documentary from Resonance to announce the release...

I've got a double CD of Sonny in Paris in 1966 and Copenhagen 1968 with similar exhaustive (and exhausting) long tracks. He certainly gave value and more for money.

Wondered if you were aware of this album too as I think it would probably top you Christmas list....

@ Bremen 1964 & 1975 is the first legitimate release of two concerts from bassist and composer Charles Mingus. Read JazzTimes' review of the four-disc set.

It makes you wonder what else might turn up from the vaults.

                        As suggested, a Sonny request...!

Alyn, taking advantage of your suggestion, can I request Sonny et al playing "Blue Room" from this highly welcome release from one of Sonny's most inventive periods, and a favourite of mine dating from Sonny's "On Impulse" session in 1965. Also it's the shortest track. If so, can I dedicate it to Catherine Eva of Clifton, Bristol. Catherine's a Sonny admirer and my irreplaceable "bubble" associate for the current lockdown/up. We both, like most of your listeners, can't wait to get out of our respective "Blue Rooms" ASAP! Many thanks, Richard Harris.

Sounds absolutely fascinating. Must check it out, as my two favourite Sonny LPs (other than "A Night at the Village Vanguard") are On Impulse! and East Broadway Run Down.

Sonny's version of "Everything Happens to Me" on On Impulse! is teh best track on that LP IMO. Just so conversational, like he's telling you his woes in the pub.
