    Scarla with an X

    Sat 7 Nov
    12midnight - Freeness

Featuring the creative sounds of Bangkok-based duo Yama, who are making waves on Thailand's experimental scene with music inspired by yoga philosophy. Plus new quartet Scarla O'Horror - who promise a juxtaposition of horn lines, fuzz and distortion - and a collage piece from Slovenian pianist Kaja Draksler.

A Bangkok-based duo called Yama create music inspired by yoga philosophy.

    Sun 8 Nov
    4pm - Jazz Record Requests

Alyn Shipton with recordings by John Hodges, Django Reinhardt, Keith Jarrett and others.

Jazz records from across the genre, as requested by Radio 3 listeners.

    Mon 10 - Fri 14 Nov
12noon - Composer of the Week: James P Johnson

    Thurs 12 Nov
    2pm - Afternoon Concert

Julian Joseph - Tristan and Isolde

Our host's 2 hr operatic update on the legend, with another host of stars.

    Fri 13 Nov
7.30pm onwards (with gap from 10-11pm however)

Jumoké Fashola and Kevin Le Gendre host an almost uninterrupted evening, and sleepless night to follow, of jazz programmes too many to detail here (maybe later, if I have time!) celebrating the opening of this year's London Jazz Festival. Lovely pic of our African queen Jumoké on P 132 of Radio Times.

A late-night edition of J to Z with live music from Kansas Smitty’s and special guests.

And on Friday BBC4, in a brilliant clash of over-compensatory enthusiasm, is showcasing Ella:

9pm - Ella Fitzgerald: Just One of Those Things

Feature-length documentary with tributes from various of our great and goods.

    10.30pm - Ella Fitzgerald Sings

    A 1965 performance.

And finally [mops sweat from brow}:

    11.10pm - Jazz Divas Gold

Ella, Peggy Lee, Blossom Dearie, Nina Simone, Cleo Laine, Eartha Kitt, Marion Montgomery, Betty Carter, Sarah Vaughan and Amy Winehouse, from various BBC archives, if you can bear Parkinson and Morecambe & Wise and other host box contextualisations.

I forgot to mention that someone must have tipped off the programmer at the BBC that tomorrow is my birthday! Normally I wouldn't mention this depressing marker of yet another wasted year, but reaching 75 has to represent some kind of milestone, or tombstone.

And in any case, I've now reached the stage at which people all over the country have to set off fireworks on the night before to remind me!

Just for you. And for me in a way because it was my birthday last weekend although I'm one year behind you! Ben Wester/Teddy Wilson trio "Old Folks", live. Which is good to be at our age. Lovely piano from Mr Wilson...just noticed Ben's tears afterwards...

And many thanks again for all these listings.

One doesn't seem to hear "Penny for the guy" these days any more.

I remember once, passing a group of kids, aged about 11 or 12, one of them shouting out "Penny for the guy please!"

"Where's the guy then?" I wanted to know.

He pointed down at what appeared to be no more than an old pillow, adding, "It's for a home".

              "What home?"

"OUR home!" came back the reply.

Thanks OG - a bottle of St Sprees proprietory Hock, £4.50 to go with the fish fingers tonight. Would have been £2.99 not so long ago before they upped the duty on plonk!

Thanks Ian - despite all our differences, based on where we're coming from eras-wise, we still manage to agree over quite a lot of today's contemporary stuff!

We both of us remember the trad/mod schism of the early 1960s then; my best school mate and I fell out after I was converted to bebop (over the school goal posts) and were not on speaking terms for 6 months. Later on he became Sonny and Cher's roady - obviously betraying all his principles!
