    The last of the LOLLards

    Sat 31 Oct
    5pm - J to Z

Jumoké Fashola with new and classic jazz, today featuring a live performance by pianist Ashley Henry, a rising star on the London scene. And Manchester-based trumpeter, producer and DJ Matthew Hallsall shares some of the music that inspires him.

Live music from UK pianist Ashley Henry plus trumpeter Matthew Halsall's inspirations.

    12midnight - Freeness
Corey Mwamba presents music that ignites joy and happiness, featuring trumpeter Dave Holdsworth with his group New Brew, and saxophone duo Dee Byrne (alto) and Cath Roberts (baritone). There's also a sound collage recorded in 1999 in Glasgow, with pop samples, electronics and saxophonist Lol Coxhill and bassoonist Lindsay Cooper (1932-2012).

Lol's dates were 1932-2012, just in case anyone thinks he might still be alive, which would probably amuse him in a wry kind of way. Lol's Lollardism consisted in his being one of that generation that translated the "bible" of American jazz into his own English vernacular, though I don't suppose he did so intentionally, having his Christian name in mind. Lindsay Cooper (1951-2013) played a bassoon in Henry Cow and Mike Westbrook's Cortege line-up; she was in Maggie Nicol's improvising vocal group FIG, and composed a neo-Brechtian musical titled "Oh Moscow!" among many other things. Greatly missed. Dave Holdsworth (whose name was misspelt by Radio Times) first popped up in Mike Westbrook's late 1960s Concert Band, at which time he frequently headlined alongside Mike Osborne, John Surman and Harry Miller in an "alternative jazz" dive just off the City of London called The Peanuts Club, and re-emerged a few years back in an Osborne tribute band, with Chris Biscoe in the Ozzy role, and the great Tony Marsh on drums - another hugely missed jazz shifter: so many greats who are no more. Pat Thomas, the big gruff friendly guy from Oxford, was doing the electronics for this performance, states the link blurb - great photo btw, but who's the dancing mews? - with Bill Wells on electric bass, a name new to me.

Corey Mwamba presents music that ignites joy and happiness.

    4pm - Jazz Record Requests

Jazz records from across the genre, as requested by Radio 3 listeners.

That seems to be it - apart from me reaching my three quarters of a century on the Friday (the 6th), all being well. These days they always remind me by setting off fireworks on the night before.

As is sometimes the way a thread title will catch the eye, even though the subject may be an unknown. In this case I saw Lollards and thought 'Lollards Pit' in Norwich - but then saw it was a jazz related item... Less harrowing it has to be said.

Well, I value this Forum for learning a lot about subjects which I could not have imagined. In his case Lollardy, which appears to be a respectable strand of English Protestantism:: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lollardy
