Moran nuff to Foat your bloat!

    Sat 10 Oct
    5pm - J to Z

Jumoké Fashola with live music from US piano star Jason Moran. And British pianist Greg Foat shares some of the music that inspires him.

Live music from pianist Jason Moran, plus Greg Foat’s inspirations.

    12midnight - Freeness
Corey Mwamba with more music from the sessions recorded in Newcastle for Late Junction and Freeness in association with TUSK festival, including pianist Cecil Taylor with percussionist Tony Oxley, recorded in November 2011 at Birdland in Neuberg, Germany.

There seems to be some mistake in the link page - so apologies for offering no details this week.

    Sun 11 Oct
    4pm - Jazz Record Requests

Jazz records from across the genre, as requested by Radio 3 listeners

    Fri 16 Oct
    2pm - Afternoon Concert

For those interested, it includes works by black composers Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, James B Wilson, Errolyn Wallen, Florence Price (and Samuel Barber), performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales under 4 different conductors, as part of Black History Month.

Question: how do you get to Wales by car?
Answer: one in the front, one in the back.

Good to hear the Gordon Beck trio piece from "Gyroscope" chosen & praised by Greg Foat. Made me want to go back to that album and so will do. Thank you Mr Foat.

A good episode this week from what can be such a variable programme. Ms Jean-Thackray's track impressed me as almost reminiscent of the Art Ensemble of Chicago - I'm embarrassed at having forgotten about her.

Bordees may be interested in this morning's Cerys Matthews show over there on 6Music. She often plays jazz on her show, and today was no exception. This morning she played Monk & Trane, then had a feature on the trumpet with an interview with trumpeter Tomos Williams, with Miles playing So What at Carnegie Hall, then some Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, and finally a bit of Tomasz Stanko. She also played some Shirley Scott (with Stan Turrentine on tenor), and a bit of Brubeck. (There's also a curious Indian-tinged version of Take Five ). Oh yes, there's also a piece by Charlier & Sourisse featuring Philip Catherine, and some cool arrangements.

Helen Merrill with Gil Evans was of interest.

She is now 90 years old, but I don't know if she is still performing. Her Website hasn't been updated since 2018, and when I search on YouTube for a recent recording, I just get recordings made in the '50's!

......I guess her son's death in 2019 must have been a blow....

She worked a lot and recorded with Gordon Beck (as above) throughout the 1980s, they had an extremely sympathetic partnership. She had later albums released, including in 2000 and 2003. She cut a Verve album "Just Friends" in 1989 with Stan Getz, and I remember her saying Getz had been allocated the lion's share of the budget even though it was HER album!

There's a gorgeous version of her singing "Everything happens to me" on You Tube, not live, a recording from I guess the late 50s early 60s. Her control in matchless.

Helen Merrill actually did a studio set for us at Maida Vale for Radio 3 when I was co-presenting Impressions with Brian Morton in 1994. But he pulled rank and went and did the interview. It was a lovely set, with Gordon Beck on piano (who in a bit of synergy with this week's JRR was a mate of Peter King, and a similarly obsessed Aero-modeller, though I did keep that bit of geekiness out of my farewell to Peter.)
