Go-going for a Burt on Freeness

    Sat 19 Sept
    5pm - J to Z

Jumoké Fashola presents a session by Manchester trio GoGo Penguin, recorded in the BBC Radio Theatre in London. Here they perform from their recently released self-titled fifth studio album. And New York-based jazz alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa shares some of the music that inspires him, including a recording by Indian vocal virtuoso Begum Parween Sultana.

Live music from Manchester trio GoGo Penguin. Plus Rudresh Mahanthappa's inspirations.

    12midnight - Freeness

    Sun 20 Sept
    4pm - Jazz Record Requests

Jazz records from across the genre, as requested by Radio 3 listeners

Not surprised no one has come on to praise the edition of J to Z now on. Even I could do better than Go-Go Penguin's a-melodic brand of modal vacuity carried to a point of dogma.

Yes, but the gushing presenter seems very impressed by it all.

She just said "Take it away". I replied, "Go, GO!"

It's like, they've composed the accompaniment figures (which aren't even very interesting, even when varying the metres or resorting to triplets), but forgotten or not bothered to write a melody to go with it: a bit like Minimalism after it ran out of new ideas.

Yes J to Z hit an all-time low with me. Lots to complain about.

However JRR keeps going onwards and upwards!

Just getting round to Freeness. What surprises in store?

But isn't that what Freeness essentially is, like a sampler CD?

I would have to agree with that assessment. However, that is not to say one knows in advance what is coming up in terms of actual music - which seems especially germane to the fresh ears approach recommended for listening to what is on offer.

This was a pretty good programme, I thought, btw.

I enjoyed the programme too. Given the programme is only an hour long, extracts may be the better way forward, especially as the audience reaction to any particular longer item may be unpredictable.

I still would maintain that excerpts allow for too bitty a programme to be able to make sense of this music; I do so wish there was a better series on free jazz and improv, maybe one that went more into its history and background, which then went into the music's internationalisation. Still, I suppose we have to be grateful for small mercies!
