At least Freeness was not a repeat, but a fresh episode.

Actually, I don't mind repeats, because there's generally a lot to pick up that was missed on the first hearing.

......J to Z verging on World Roots last night.......

I have to say I quite enjoyed the Nérija numbers performed, having rather dissed the recording - criticism that was largely down to the absurd reverb effectings of some of the solos on the album: I see little point in having solos isolated in such a way, as if being played via headphones from some distant galaxy. That said, I think over-enthusiasm for these musicians is still a bit over-stated, or premature. Freeness is improving now, as Corey gets into his stride and gives us a little more background, at least on some of the artists, if not yet enough. This is where the programme on Japanese jazz was a reminder of the excellent way all such programmes were once done. In that respect it shares with J to Z: who are these people?? On J to Z the Cuban singer Daymé Arocena was a sheer delight in her presenting and talking about the tracks of mainly Cuban bands, and the personalities of vocalists who've inspired her - and inspired me too, despite my not having heard or known anything about them beforehand. That somebody like Daymé exists says heaps about the country she comes from, in my book. I have to wonder, seriously though, about Corey's enthusiasm when it comes to some of the items; that track largely consisting of electronic noise and screaming is the sort of thing that can only be done once - a case of diminishing returns.

Well the thing about Nerija is we did do a session with them on Jazz Now a while before J to Z. And that avoided the album style mix too...

Yes Nerija: a very professional group.

Couldn't agree more about noise and screaming.

Any signs on the horizon that R3 may have a change of heart about a Jazz Now type series?
