Radio 2 - Sat 29 Aug
6am - Sounds of the 60s
To mark the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr's 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech, former Motown star Martha Reeves sits in for Tony Blackburn with hit of the era and personal reminiscences.
That is such a relief to read I thought it worth drawing to bordees' attentions.
Many will remember the bouffon uniform hairstylings worn by the black Soul artistes of that time, or will have seen pictures. Round the back from where we lived in South Ken, two Jamaican women opened a hair salon specifically catering in this kind of hairdo. One day my mum and I were passing by the shop: one of the owners happened to be sweeping the front step, and a "lady" stopped by and asked loudly in a very plummy voice, "Excuse me - do you do normal people's hair?". She probably politely answered "Certainly madam, when would you like to come?" though in retrospect I wish we'd waited to hear her reply.

5pm - J to Z
Julian Joseph and guests celebrate altoist and bebop pioneer Charlie Parker (1920-55) born 100 years ago today. Vocalist Sheila Jordan, maverick pianist Django Bates and British altoists Nathaniel Facey and Alan Barnes share some of their favourite recordings.
12midnight - Freeness
Mats Gustafsson directs the Fire! Orchestra in Polish composer Krysztof Penderecki's 1971 work Actions for Free Jazz Orchestra. Corey Mwamba also presents live music by the Art Ensemble of Chicago. First broadcast in March, shortly before the death of Penderecki, aged 86.
This is worth a second hearing. Free jazz played a vital part in helping a number of E European composers break with the aesthetic legacy of Stalinism from the 1950s onwards: Penderecki was just one.
Sun 30 Aug
4pm - Jazz Record Requests
Thursday 3 Sept's BBC Proms at 11 pm is a repeat of the Laura Mvula concert from 2014, which from memory was actually much better than one had been anticipating. Gosh, was that really six years ago??
