Just be Still - we're all on the Mats now

    Sat 1 Aug
    5pm - J to Z

Julian Joseph presents a home session from leading UK pianist Andrew McCormack, here performing a lyrical set drawn from his latest album Solo. McCormack's piano explorations reflect his diverse musical interests, referencing everything from Stravinsky to Thelonious Monk.

There is an interview with McCormack in this month's Jazzwise, by the way.

    12midnight - Freeness
Corey Mwamba presents performances recorded in July 2019 at the 40th Konfrontationen festival, in a small town on the Austrian/Hungarian border. There are highlights from an improvised set by US drummer Hamid Drake and Swiss pianist Irène Schweizer, and the inter-generational, genre-straddling act Anguish featuring Will Brooks, Mats Gustavsson, Hans Joachim Irmler, Mike Mare and Andreas Werlin. Plus music from pianist Satoko Fuji, drummer Taysuya Yoshida and psychedelic otherworldly sounds from Leverton Fox.

    4pm - Jazz Record Requests

Alyn Shipton with jazz records requested by Radio 3 listeners

    Tues 4 Aug
9pm - The Jazz Show with Jamie Calumny

    Spot the deliberate mistake there.

Jamie Cullum showcases his love of jazz, featuring live sessions and special guests.

All next week African-American composer William Grant Still (1895-1978) is Composer of the Week (1200 - 1300 hrs Mon-Fri). Grant Still studied with the great Franco-American innovator Edgard Varèse - not that you'd necessary know that from his music. This series is a repeat - I remember now.

On telly, a repeat on BBC4:
    Sat 1 Aug - 10.45pm
    Aretha Franklin: Respect.

A tribute to the singer known as the Queen of Soul, featuring contributions from Tom Jones, Beverley Knight, Clarke Peters and Trevor Nelson among others. Franklin was raised in Detroit where her father preached, and grew up singing gospel. Her career ignited when she signed to Atlantic in 1967 and global hits such as I Say a Little Prayer and Respect quickly established her in the soul genre.

That must mean that the girl I went out with in '66 was ahead of the curve in her tastes.

Also on BBC4, Friday 7 Aug, 9pm Everything: The Real Thing Story

Hour and a half feature about the 1970s Merseyside jazz-funk band - Liverpool's answer to Parliament? Followed on same wavelenth by:

10.30pm Beats, Bass and Bars: the Story of Grime

A timely repeat of a programme about a subject matter one of whose leading lights has been invoking some controversy of late for not being in the Labour Party.
