9pm - Gospel According to Mica: the Story of Gospel Music in Six Songs
Soul singer Mica Paris traces the origins of the songs she sang as a child. At her childhood church, she explores the complex meaning behind Amazing Grace, before travelling to the American cotton fields where slaves sang gospel songs to make their work more bearable. She meets the choir at Fisk University in Tennessee, formed just after the abolition of slavery, and learns how slavery freedom fighters used gospel to communicate. As well as delving into the history of singers such as Sam Cooke and Thomas A Dorsey, Mica looks at how Stormzy has succeeded in combining church and secular music.
