    Annie Ross rip...

"Annabelle Allan Short, known professionally as Annie Ross, died on July 21 in New York City, four days ahead of her 90th Birthday. She was best known as a member of the jazz vocal trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross along with the late Dave Lambert and Jon Hendricks. She had been the last surviving member of the group." - Syncopated Times... And So much more...

    RIP.

Annie Ross, "I've grown accustomed to your face" http://youtu.be/Rk-f_pydNxg with Gerry Mulligan & Art Farmer 1957.

The Hendricks Lambert and Ross sound vocalising the Jazz greats was great influence on Georgie Fame, Manhattan Transfer and others. RIP Annie.

      Oh dear - RIP Annie.

I still have the recording of Sing-a-Song of Basie. I believe I learnt all the tracks off by heart:

Annie's "Twisted" was the first example of vocalese I came across - which maybe was the first example, period? - putting her own words to a quite complex James Moody improvisation. Many years afterwards, James Moody did a reverse tribute by singing that vocalese at a gig I attended, which was sweet and doubtless characteristic of the guy, who we all found very friendly. I never made it to Annie's Place back in the 'sixties which she ran in the Covent garden district.

I only saw her live once at the club just beyond Hyde Park Corner - Pizza on the Park?-she was every bit as good as I'd hoped. Just remembered it was the evening we spotted George Melly, who from memory opened for Annie, sitting on the kerb at HPC vainly trying to get a taxi home, Dave who lived in Notting Hill, same as GM, gave him a lift and George invited him in for a coffee.

"Twisted" was the Wardell Grey record. Bob Weinstock (Prestige) asked her if she could write lyrics, she said yes, and came back the next morning with the lines to Wardell's Twisted and I think Hampton Hawes Jackie. The rest is history. She had a remarkable & not easy life and personal relationships, Lenny Bruce anyone? And was a fine actress..."Short Cuts" for example.

                    * i always liked her story of Chet Baker asking her for a $100 loan to "get his crankcase fixed". "I didn't even know what a crankcase was! I gave him the money, he disappeared to the toilet with some guy and that's the last I saw of him. We had to get Art Farmer in to finish my record date with Gerry (Mulligan)!"

                    The "life" BN.

Very sad news - I always enjoyed her singing & vocalese:

The classic greasy groover by 1/3 of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross that kicked off a new way of sublime expression in jazz - fluid drive with Art Blakey & Perc...

......A clear natural voice.....but it was her exquisite sense of timing that set her apart as a great Jazz vocalist.

Annie Ross obit. by John Fordham:

Jazz singer whose vocally athletic style brought her acclaim as a solo performer and with the trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross
