Keeping up - or getting down - with the Jones

    Sat 13 June
    5pm - J to Z

Jumoké Fashola presents live music from Nduduzo Makhathini, a rising star of South African piano, recorded at his home in the city of East London. And British orthopaedic surgeon-turned-saxophonist Art Themen, now 80, shares music that inspires him.

Nduzduzo's looks to be a name to be looking out for:

Live music from the South African piano star, plus Art Themen’s inspirations.

    12midnight - Freeness
Corey Mwamba presents, with turntablist Mariam Rezaei discussing her album Skeen-Agency.

Also an improv quartet led by US saxophonist Paul Flaherty.

The turntablist talks about how she makes the glitchy juxtapositions on her new album.

    Sun 14 June
    4pm - Jazz Record Requests

    [Incorrect write-up in Radio Times]*

Jazz records from across the genre, as requested by Radio 3 listeners.

    Tues 16 June
11pm - The Jazz Show with Jamie Cullum

New and classic jazz recordings. Plus guests, tonight with songwriter Norah Jones, who joins Jamie for a lockdown interview about her latest album, Pick Me Up off the Floor. Jones has also recorded an exclusive session of three of the album's songs for Jamie.

Incidentally, Cleo Laine (now 92) takes part in Inside Music (Saturday 11.00-15.00 hrs) alongside violinist Maxim Vengerov, flautist James Galway and pianist Radu Lupu discussing recordings of Schubert, James McMillan "and others".

Art Themen always was a saxophonist of course, whilst also being an orthopaedic surgeon. It's just that he's now given up the saw, but kept the axe!

Art might even be a secret palmist! A few years ago I nabbed him as he was leaving the platform for a midway break, and he held out my outstretched hand, examined it for a moment, and said, "You'll be OK"! Last time when I saw him play, which was was at The Oval pub in Croydon - the then-regular Sunday lunchtime freebie - he was playing great as ever, and looking good for his years: none of that tell-tale "chicken neck" men beyond a certain age tend to sport. Really looking forward to his choice of tracks.

Dunno where you got the billing for JRR S-A, because although there is a certain Groundhog Day feel about the lockdown, this is what it says on the website for this Sunday: Alyn Shipton presents jazz records from across the genre, as requested by Radio 3 listeners, with music from Erroll Garner, Ike Quebec, Buddy Rich and Thelonious Monk. I think the one you've put up is past its use-by date...29 March to be precise.

Being an orthopaedic surgeon he often carried out "hip" surgery

Thanks Alyn - I just copied what it says in Radio Times!

"You Must Believe in Radio Times" - NOT!

The 29 March billing for JRR is given in the current issue of Radio Times!
Pity they got it wrong as I was looking forward to another Willie Smith track.
Would love to hear his great 1947 quintet version of 'Sophisticated Lady' sometime.

Great choices and commentary by Art Themen on J to Z - decidedly non-hip (in the with-it sense), but certainly HIPP in regard to his comments re: college education in jazz and the relevance of Louis Armstrong to aspiring young jazz musicians of today.

I was reminded just now, listening to the Errol Garner track on JRR, that one of the first approaches I practised without any hope of becoming an adept was the "Garner left hand" - those broken tenths on every main beat that betray Garner's adaptation of what really were pre-bop mannerisms, however unique to himself. After all, you wouldn't need to embarrass yourself begging for a bass player to... accompany.

How many have spotted the Brits among that 1974 Herman line-up playing "Chameleon"?
