Walked into town today to pick up a book I'd ordered from Waterstones (see What Are You Reading Thread) and popped into HMV to buy the remastered double-CD Giant Steps which I'd eyed up before and while I was there I ordered the recently released (and discovered) Village Gate album with Eric Dolphy, which should be ready to collect on Thursday.

Currently spinning Giant Steps which sounds fabulous of course, and nice not having to deal with adverts from youtube...

After the gig last night I bought a couple of Paul Dunmall CDs: Soultime, which I was very happy to find since its sequel I have been raving about on this jass bored and elsewhere and Utoma Trio, which features Tony Bianco, Paul Dunmall and Simon Picard. Currently listening to Soultime...

Just picked up a copy of Milcho Leviev and Art Pepper's Blues For The Fisherman on Mole Jazz vinyl for a tenner in my local record shop (never thought I would be able to write that again, in fact there are two of them here).

I have a copy of Utoma Trio on CD which was recommended to me by the late Chas of these boreds and the earlier one formerly run by a certain broadcasting corporation. As it's now Friday teatime, I will also insert a row of smilies. Just for old times' sake. RIP Chas and Calum da Jazbo.

            Awesome.

I have been considering buying this today, being as it's Bandcamp Friday and it received a good review in the Guardian, and also that it's Paul Dunmall, of course - Bright Light A Joyous Celebration - 162CD (2023) | Paul Dunmall | Discus Music (bandcamp.com)

I think I may have paid even less for my copy at the local flea market a few years ago when sites were claiming its rarity value and demanding the earth.

I see that has the great Hamid Drake, whom Paul went over to the States to play for the first time with. He nearly got a gig with Rashied Ali, but so sadly he died. What a chance that would have been! I had the cheek to ask Paul would he have ever envisaged playing with such titans of jazz history back in the early days, and he affirmed yes, he had always entertained expectations it would happen for him one day!

Inflation, innit? I remember the days when a pigfoot and a bottle of beer cost just £3.

And that was for an organically-farmed pigfoot and a bottle of craft IPA.

Today I sauntered into town as part of a two-hour walk, in order to deposit a birthday cheque and I decided to go browse HMV. I ended up buying this:

The CD arrived surprisingly quickly - today.

Currently spinning. I still like listening to CDs - and the artwork and liner notes are attractively presented. Also, as I've mentioned here before, I don't know how to get the tracks of downloaded albums to play continuously (to do this sometimes I'll stream it off Bandcamp) but obviously a CD will do that automatically.

Also, when inviting friends round, it's nice to be able to guide them to a shelf or shelves of CDs for them to peruse for something to listen to - easier than with those old LPs with spines too narrow (or worn out with time!) to read the titles without dragging out the sleeve.
