Barry Guy's mostly European players-based Blue Shroud Band from 3 years ago performing a Beckett text-based work in Poland. Trumpeter Percy Pursglove might be recognised along with his beard from recentish collaborations with Keith Tippett and Paul Dunmall This is for the most part, if not quite all, post-Cecil Taylor in idiom from a this side of The Pond angle, and heavy stuff, but I felt it sat better here than on whatever has become of the Experimental etc thread.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-A-v3PE4p_U&t=365s

The blue shroud refers to said shroud being used to cover a large reproduction of
Picasso's Guernica at the band's premier in 2003, coinciding purely by chance with Britain's and America's invasion into Iraq.

Recent amazing footage of Albert Ayler’s Quintet in 1966 on YouTube mentioned on Patrick Regan’s fascinating Ayler website:

i was at this gig. It was fantastic. I spoke to some of the musicians the next day as they boarded the traun to Lyon. I think i saw Rpy Hargrove about 4 times but the big band qas a dream prject for him. I feel that Harfrove was indebted to Dizzy.

Whatever happened to Roberta Gambacini ?

The cd is terrific but not playwd it for a while. Even my Dad thought it was a brilliant disc.

You were lucky to have been there, Ian. Very sad that Roy Hargrove departed so early.
Have just ordered a copy of his Big Band CD, ‘Emergence’, after reading your Amazon review!
            Many thanks.

See my post on the Listening to thread re the duo concert 2 CD album by Hargrove and Mulgrew Miller. The second CD of the set is even better than the first.

As I recall Hargrove said his biggest influences were Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan and Clifford Brown. Rollins said he reminded him a lot of Brown. The documentary I posted a week ago is a really good portrait, he had significant medical issues but he pushed on through.

Will have to order the 2 CD set now as well as the Big Band album.
                Well, it’s nearly Christmas!

It's the best £13 I've spent in a very long while! The same price as bottle of festive red round my way!

Sugar Pie Desanto, who has just died at 89. American Folk Blues tour 1964. Manchester.

I saw this show at the Bristol leg of the tour. Howlin Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson, Lightnin Hopkins etc etc and the vivacious Ms Desanto! Now that's a bill you don't get everyday...

Great stuff, BN. I saw this show at Fairfield Hall, Croydon in 1964 billed as ‘The American Negro Blues Festival’! What a line-up! Sad that Sugar Pie has gone.
Here’s Lightnin’ Hopkins in 1964, but not sure where:

Para que no haya, ya a estas alturas, la menor duda, ni equívocos, ni open-minded ni leches: ESTO es el Blues.

We bought Sonny Boy a bottle of Johnny Walker - Interesting night! One of my friends who played guitar pretty well got talking to Mat Murphy at length and not long after saved up and went to Chicago to learn from him, just for a few months. Came back fluent and totally transformed! Remarkable.

I see she was a childhood buddy of the future to be renamed Etta James, one of whose tracks was on JRR today. Coincidences.

I think she was Etta James' cousin or such? They recorded a hit R&B/Soul single together, "In the basement". She also wrote for other Chess artists and had a really long career. A v. good voice away from straight all out R&B when she was given the chance. Discovered first by Johnny Otis ("we all thought he was a "brother" til we met him! He was Greek!) like so many others. Impressive lady.
