Couldn't help noticing Max Roach's opening figure to "Salt Peanuts!" at around 8'30" - though that motif could well be a lot older than Max of course.

A great opportunity for puns, as the comments show, so I'll desist, this time...

I remember reading of a performance in which Han played a drum set located on the opposite side of a stage from inside a paper bag, using a broom handle. Had Samuel Beckett written a part for a drummer he would have fitted the role magnificently. As second drummer in Andy Sheppard's wonderful big band of the early 90s we saw him "play" the Colston Hall (now re-named) in Bristol: starting from the brass rails at the back of the stalls, then the steps and backs of the seats all the way down to the stage, then the stage floor, the drum stool (getting different frequences from each leg!) before finally settling at the kit to deliver a duet with Andy's regular Buddy Rich-styled drummer.

There's some very good footage of him on YouTube playing a rehearsal with Wes Montgomery and a good Dutch pianist. And although he's thought of more in other directions, he was a fine hard bop drummer. Wes smiles at him approvingly, which didn't always happen with drummers!
