Actually an historic performance and the start of a band that would endure a good quarter of a century. Young Germany sticking its finger up at its parents' generation, as Brotzmann would tell it. Just as well this record was not left in the hands of the BBC! (Incidentally, anyone else spot Schoof's quoting from the opening to Gillespie's "Bebop" in the middle of his solo?)

Cecil Taylor Unit with Jimmy Lyons, Sam Rivers & Andrew Cyrille, Paris 1969.

I remember feeling shattered after hearing this group at Hammersmith Odeon in November, 1969 .

Was that their first gig as Globe Unity? (Answer according to Wiki: yes.) I had heard of them before but not a follower. Interesting that Brötzmann (yes I have copied the MFing umlaut this time, pedants) is on alto, and Breuker is on tenor; of course they're better known on eachother's instruments. One of the drummers, Jaki Liebezeit, was in Can a couple of years later. Your point about young Germans sticking it to their parents' generation is apt, a lot of them were deeply unhappy that many old Nazis ended up in positions of authority in government, the professions and business after the war.

Russell Davies' film about the bass saxophone featuring Harry Gold, Gunther Schuller and Willie Garnett.

I have been enjoying this film - remember being told about it after the transmission, not sure if it was repeated. Just found out that the late Harry Gold's bass saxophone has been sold to a player in the Netherlands, so it's gone to a good home.
