I find Mary Halvorson a preplexing musician. Depsite the avant credentials, every time I hear her I am reminded of the playing of her teacher, Philip Catherine. I really think her own records are better when she works with larger ensembles but, for me, her best playing is with Tomeka Reid's quartet even though we always picks some great sidemen such as Jacob Garchik, Jon Iragaon and Johnathan Finlayson. Her last album was really good but suffered from a very short playing time of under 40 mins.
