Arthur Doyle, alto solo. the kind of thing to soundtrack a Liz Truss press conference.

Oddily enough, the clip of Arthur Doyle also includes a link to another documentary and I did start to watch this beofre switching off. I have to say that I think Doyle is legitimate as "music" but I think it is still pretty rubbish if I am honest. The problem I had with the documentary is that it is clear Doyle was not a well man when the film was made. I think he was being exploited. There was a section where he was ambushed by a "fan" and Doyle's replies came across as unintelligle. Not sure that this film would have been made in 2022 as people would have been converend with Doyle's well-being.

I am all for jazz being adventurous yet I would always contend that there is nothing worse than bad avant garde jazz. Ultimately, this is more of an exercise about timbre than anything else and if you transcribed what Doyle was playing you would quickly appreciate that it does not amount to much. This kind of stuff gives jazz a bad name.

A very moving short film on Eric Dolphy:

I was recently made aware (again, I'd seen it a while back) of this owing to the untimely demise of Joey Defrancesco, but it really underlines (even more) for me what a sublime player John McLaughlin is. The first tune is a great post-bop blues called 'Thelonious Melodious', and McLaughlin's sense of swing is so funky and in the pocket it's incredible, and Defrancesco more than holds his own as well as contributing lots of colourful chords to proceedings.

                Wonderful to see that, elmo.
I live in hope of one day seeing a decent video of Albert Ayler in action.

I agree that would be something, especially the 'Spiritual Unity' trio. As you could guess for me, film of Elmo Hope would be a revelation. Incidentally Albert Ayler was at a gig where Elmo was playing and when Albert started to play Elmo sat in the front seat engrossed.

WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL! Amazing find! And such a great performance from all, great recording and filming by the Danes. An absolute gem, even down to Kenny Drew smoking through Nhop's solo, thems the days! Thanks so much alerting to this, made my year!

*I see from the US Organissimo site that the guy who located this is a Ukrainian living in Ukraine (nice and peaceful?), who is highly connected in the archive film and video world and professionally searches for rare material, so could be more somewhere/sometime?

A bit more on Hank in Denmark live just now from Dan Gold on Organissimo...

                          When was this found...

DG..."Quite recently. And Hank was not referenced in the contents which would help keep things hidden for decades. Dollar Brand and Dexter were the recognized stars on the program, with the Hank recording given the opening spot.

What is intriguing is to consider if they recorded a whole set of Hank and company, with other tracks to be used on other broadcasts. If they continued to not list Mobley in favor of better known artists, there might be several other recordings in existence.'

Archie Shepp with Siegfried Kessler, Cameron Brown & Clifford Jarvis live in Torino, 1977:

Bluesie - Yes that seems perfectly feasible, you would have thought though in the 2 years he was with Miles something would have been filmed. In 1962 the Miles band with Hank was augmented for a time with J J Johnson, that would be one to see or hear.

This...Don Gold: "Looking at the Dutch Archives CD release from 2016, I believe the Pim Jacobs recordings were taken from a TV broadcast from a regular tv studio. So it wouldn't be new music necessarily but maybe there is video to match those tracks on the CD."

Agree about Hank with JJ & Miles. Although Europe seems to be the treasure chest for this stuff, I wonder what's in the Austrian TV archive because they were sitting on a load of audio stuff.
